This t-shirt speaks to forgotten Black military heroism, service under segregation, and the truth that Black Marines helped carry the fight at Iwo Jima.
The strongest message is that the Montford Point Marines were not just background support — they were part of the victory. The design honors the 8th Marine Ammunition Company and 36th Marine Depot Company, Black Marine units connected to Iwo Jima service during World War II. Official Marine history notes that at Iwo Jima, the 8th Marine Ammunition Company and the 33rd, 34th, and 36th Marine Depot Companies served as part of the shore party for V Amphibious Corps, with elements of the 8th Ammunition Company and 36th Depot Company landing on D-Day, February 19, 1945.
Visually, the design has a premium military tribute feel. The gold “MONTFORD POINT MARINES” headline, Marine Corps emblem styling, red banners, laurel leaves, ammunition crates, ships, black sand battlefield energy, and Iwo Jima island background all give it a serious commemorative look. It feels like a veteran tribute shirt, a Black history shirt, and a military heritage piece all in one.
The three Black Marines in the center are the heart of the design. They speak to:
Supply under fire — ammunition, crates, and landing craft show that these Marines helped keep the battle moving.
Courage under pressure — the smoke, ships, beach landing, and battlefield details show they served in dangerous conditions.
Recognition long overdue — the bold words “BLACK MARINES AT IWO JIMA” make the hidden history impossible to ignore.
The phrase “Courage Under Fire” works well because it captures what these Marines represented: service, discipline, bravery, and sacrifice while serving in a segregated military. Montford Point was the segregated training camp where Black Marines trained during World War II, and around 20,000 Black Marines are known today as Montford Point Marines
